I hope I don’t come across as one of those peevish snobs who hate their friends for their success and what they can afford. I’ve been Beryl’s closest buddy since campus. We shared all our secrets and discussed all our adventures. Basically, there is nothing we haven’t told each other.
Or so I thought. So one she comes over with, “Hey Sue, do you like my new Jimmy Choos?” (For your Information, Sue is my name and Jimmy Choos are the shoes only a rich boyfriend buys you). So how come Beryl was able to afford these? And that was just the beginning. Since January my so-called “friend” has filled her shoe closet with the best designer shoes I’ve ever laid my eyes on outside of Instagram. It sucked for me that I couldn’t afford what she had and yet we basically earned the same salary. Did she have a secret lover that I didn’t know about?Â
It’s natural that I was brimming with rage, jealousy, anger, and betrayal when I finally confronted her. What she told me shamed and shook me to this day. I blush in shame whenever I think about it.
Beryl told me, and I quote her, “I know you must be wondering how I could afford all these, it’s simple and easy. I choose what to forego in order to fulfil my guilty pleasures. You know I love shoes more than anything. So in order to indulge in this sin and avoid debt, I carefully spend time online scanning for deals and sales promotions, I only go out once a month, and I make sure I never pay more than a thousand bob, I take matatus and avoid Uber at all costs and finally, have you noticed that I am working part-time as an online editor. It’s the little things that count. It all adds up.
Once I have enough to make a purchase and after careful selection, I place an online order. After that, I get ready to indulge in my favourite pastime, arranging my shoes in the closet and admiring them. That’s the secret honey.
